Representing Vulnerable Clients

Our founding attorney, Leif Becker, prioritizes putting his clients in the best possible position for resolving their legal disputes. He has accepted more than 70 pro bono cases since 2019 including many from New Hampshire’s Domestic Violence Emergency Project (DOVE). He stepped up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure vulnerable clients in distress due to domestic violence received the legal services and protection they needed in their time of crisis. Serving clients throughout the state, attorney Becker received recognition from The New Hampshire Bar Association (NHBA) for his commitment to equal justice for disadvantaged and low-income clients; he was named as a 2021 Pro Bono Rising Star for his valuable contributions.

Attorney Becker was named a 2020 recipient of “Life Changer” award by Haven, the state’s preeminent domestic violence and sexual violence support and prevention agency. The agency serves 48 communities in southeastern New Hampshire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, even if you didn’t commit the crime you’re being questioned about, you should always consult with an attorney before answering police questions – and it’s your legal right to do so. Your lawyer protects your rights and can help you avoid being unfairly detained if you are not arrested. Even if you believe you are innocent and had nothing to do with the matter, the police may not believe you. Our attorneys can guide you when answering questions, advising you when to remain silent and how to answer certain questions.

Unfortunately, innocent people are wrongfully arrested, accused, and convicted all too often. Our criminal attorney can help you avoid this and guide you through the matter.

You have certain rights when being questioned by police, as stated in the Miranda Warning given to people who are placed under arrest. You have the right to remain silent during questioning if you believe that answering may incriminate you. You also have the right to have an attorney present during questioning and to consult privately with the lawyer. If you have not been placed under arrest, you have the right to ask if you are free to go; if you are not lawfully detained, then the police must allow you to leave. Our criminal defense attorneys can help protect these and your other civil rights.

Often! New Hampshire is strict about DUI charges, and if you’re convicted of a DUI, your license could be suspended. A DUI lawyer can negotiate a plea arrangement with the prosecutor on your case to enable you to keep your license or arrange for a hardship license. Even if it’s your second or subsequent DUI, an attorney can often help you achieve a better outcome and lesser penalties than you may be able to on your own.

Yes, even if you are having an amicable divorce or you and your spouse are working toward a collaborative divorce, having your own attorney review the settlement and determine what is in your best interests is always advantageous. If you share children, a family law lawyer can determine if the custody arrangement complies with New Hampshire laws and will be approved by a judge.

We recommend consulting with our DUI lawyers before pleading guilty to a DUI charge, even if you believe that the evidence is stacked against you. The consequences of a DUI conviction go far beyond fines or a few days in jail. If you rely on a driver’s license for work, such as a traveling sales job or as a commercial driver, you may not be able to continue in that line of work with a DUI conviction. We may also advise you to plead not guilty if we think there are problems with your traffic stop or the DUI testing.

Your legal options often depend on your situation, which is why your domestic violence lawyer will often ask about any evidence you have against the perpetrator. You may be able to file for emergency orders, including a protective order and even emergency child custody orders if you believe your children are in danger. Your other legal options include legal separation from the abuser through divorce or a legal separation.
