The New Hampshire Supreme Court hears appeals from the lower circuit courts (probate, family law, and district) and the superior court (which handles more serious matters, such as criminal charges). An appeal of an adjudicated case (one in which a court has rendered a decision) isn’t simply a “do-over” or another chance to get the outcome you want. Instead, appeals are reserved for situations in which the lower court has made a legal error, or for mistakes or omissions at trial that could have affected the outcome. Some individuals may also petition the court to hear an appeal due to a lack of adequate legal counsel.
