A trial for former Strafford County Sheriff Mark Brave, which had been scheduled to begin in early August, has been put on hold at the request of the state.

Brave, who was arrested last August, is accused of stealing approximately $19,000 in county funds by submitting personal expenses for reimbursement with “fraudulent justifications,” and committing perjury by lying to a grand jury about an extramarital affair and his travel and entertainment expenditures related to it.

Former Strafford County Sheriff Mark Brave has been added to New Hampshire’s Exculpatory Evidence Schedule, a list of law enforcement officers with credibility issues, but it’s not because he’s facing multiple felony charges.

Brave was recently placed on the EES (formerly known as the Laurie List) at the request of the Strafford County commissioners for lying about circumstances surrounding his former wife’s arrest for driving under the influence in December 2022, following a holiday party.

Former Strafford County Sheriff Mark Brave’s criminal case is in limbo as prosecutors push back the trial that was set to start in the coming days, possibly sparing more charges against the lothario lawman.

Brave, once a rising star in the New Hampshire Democratic Party, is accused of stealing close to $20,000 in taxpayer money to fund multiple extra-marital affairs, and then lying about the money and affairs when called to testify before a grand jury.

Democratic Strafford County Sheriff Mark Brave found his “Get Out of Jail Free” card. He quit his job.

Until Tuesday, the accused fraudster was on paid leave while his case moved forward. Then, he was caught hiding that he was living in Massachusetts in violation of a court order and, therefore, illegally collecting more than $10,000 in pay as an elected official. Facing the loss of his bail deal, Brave bailed on the sheriff’s job rather than going directly to jail.
